Abstract

The production of Spirulina platensis in synthetic culture solutions is costly because of the very high requirements in mineral elements of this alga. Thus there is a necessity to research for others substrates giving way to a massive production at low price of this cyanobacteria. Domestic raw sewage could constitute a good substrate, the nutrient inputs can be minimized, therby effectively lowering the overall production cost. After extensive laboratory and field trials beach and field experiments, it has been possible to adapt Spirulina to sewage clarified by aerobic treatment using sodium bicarbonate as a carbone source and also to maintain the high alkalinity required for the satisfactory growth of alga. Addition to the sewage of sodium nitrate as nitrogen source has also been found. Beside studies in laboratories have demonstrated that the addition of sodium chloride to correct the salinity and of iron sulfate result in a significant improvement of the growth.
