BENI HAROUN AND KOUDIAT ACERDOUNE (ALGERIA): TWO LARGE DAMS THREATENED BY THE PHENOMENON OF SILTATION

Abstract


This article discusses the phenomenon of siltation that is currently threatening the two largest Algerian dams of Beni Haroun and Koudiat Acerdoune. Based on data on siltation that we have collected from the National Agency of Dams (ANBT) and the investigations carried out on the dam sites during the years 2016 and 2017, it appears that the density currents are manifest in the reservoirs of both dams during floods. Such a phenomenon generates annual deposits of 3.5 and 10.5 million m3 of silt in the reservoirs of Koudiat Acerdoune and Beni Haroun.
