Abstract

Coastal waters can act as nurseries for different species of fish and have been recognized as essential fish habitat. We have studied the concentrations of heavy metals in three species of fish (Pagellus acarne, Sardina pilchardus and Diplodus vulgaris) as an indicator of environmental quality. The study took place along the Atlantic coast south ofMorocco.

For fish studied, the different levels of metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were measured in the gills, liver and muscles. Concentrations of the ETM higher were obtained from Diplodus vulgaris and the lowest recorded at Pagellus acarne which is compatible with their habitat and food. Although our results are not highlighted pollution levels appreciably in the study area, between sites significant differences were found in the muscle and are generally in agreement with environmental factors known. In our study, the levels of ETM in the muscles of these fish do not exceed the standards recommended by the European community
