Abstract

Olive waste waters is identified as a by-product of the industry of the olive oil. Its rejection without any preliminary treatment damages the environment and raises of severe problem. This olive waste waters is rich in organic matter, especially polyphenols which makes these effluents very toxic.

In this work we made a treatment of olive waste waters by electrochemical way. The purpose of this study consists in making physico-chemical analyses of raw and treated samples and the identification of compounds present in olive waste waters before and after treatment by gas-phase chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy. These analyzes showed that these effluents were characterized by a highly acidic pH (5.02) and are loaded with organic materials, chemical oxygen demand (COD) (32.71 g O2 / l), a dissolved oxygen commandment of 0.5 mg / l and polyphenols (1.22 g / l).
