THE OASES OF ZAOUIET KOUTA’S FOGGARAS (ALGERIA): THREATENED HERITAGE

B. REMINI, A. KENTAOUI

Abstract

We examine in this study, one of the oldest irrigation techniques and the most used in arid regions. This is the foggaras system that has been used in the oases of Zaouiet Kounta in the wilaya of Adrar. Based on the investigations and missions carried out during the years 2015 and 2016, it follows that the introduction of new irrigation techniques have caused the drying up of several foggaras. This is how the number of foggaras in service was 160 in 1960; today there are only 37 foggaras left. In addition to the classic foggaras, oases of Zaouiet Kounta were irrigated by small foggaras called Garden foggaras which are intended to recover the drainage water.
