FROM THE FOGGARA TO THE UNDERGROUND DAM, THE ALLUVIAL TABLECLOTH, A SOLUTION FOR ARID REGIONS

B. REMINI

Abstract

This paper examines the subject of exploitation of the alluvial tableclothin certain regions of the Algerian Sahara. On the basis of bibliographic work, data collections and investigations carried out on sites in southern Algeria during the period: 2008-2020, it turns out that underground dams remain the best way to meet the needs of the population in good quality water. The results of our investigations confirm that this freshwater deposit has already been exploited by our ancestors for over 9 centuries using the foggaras system. Such ancestral works were carried out in the oases of Sfissifa (Naama), Tamanrasset and Tindouf and even in some oases of El Bayadh. Today, this water deposit is exploited by underground dams in the wilayas of Adrar, Tamanrasset, Bayadh, Illizi and Laghouat. The number of dams totaled around 30 million m3. The wilaya of Tamanrasset has five dams; an insufficient number, but it must be increased and generalized in all regions of the Sahara.
